SwimSation tactics on Toledo Bend

It came as no surprise to Covington’s Jason Pittman when Bassmaster Magazine recently ranked Toledo Bend reservoir as the top largemouth bass fishery in the nation.

“It’s what we all knew in Louisiana,” the 38-year-old angler said. “There’s no doubt this great reservoir has been just delivering tremendous numbers of huge fish to many anglers in the last three years.”

Although famous for his expertise on the Pearl River system near his home, Pittman will spend many days in the spring and summer on Toledo Bend where the angler and his family enjoy a residence there.

It often elicits strikes when falling on the edges when fished in these situations.

In the past several years, Pittman and his son Trenton have taken some great Toledo Bend lunkers up to 9 pounds and better.

“Anglers are still catching great fish at Toledo Bend even in the hottest part of this summer, and all you have to do is visit the Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program Facebook Page to see them,” the angler said.

As a Pro-staffer and bass tournament fisherman, Pittman has been on the receiving end of testing many of Mister Twister lures as prototypes before they ever reach the hands of the nation’s anglers.

One of the most recent lures that have been added to Mister Twister’s lineup is the new SwimSation, a 5-inch ribbed plastic with Poc’it® chambers, Curly Tail® appendages and a paddle tail that kicks through the watercolumn.

“Those appendages and that tail get strikes, and I have taken many bass in Toledo Bend and the Pearl River system on the new SwimSation,” Pittman said.

The anglers’s most recent Toledo Bend bass was a 5.75-pounder taken on the SwimSation.

“I was working the SwimSation on some flooded brush and that bass clobbered it,” he said. “I was swimming it like a buzzbait as its paddle tail was kicking in the water when the bass hit it.”

As for the summer, Pittman emphasized there are a three ways to fish the new Mister Twister SwimSation at Toledo Bend.

“Just swimming it weightless on a 5/0 hook gets some strikes,” he said. “I will cast it over grass tops, hyacinths and lily pads and let it settle in holes in the foliage.

“You can also get fish to actively take it by just letting it drop as it falls down the edges of the grass clusters.”

Pittman also uses a product making his Mister Twister SwimSation slide even more easily on and into grass mats and lily pads.

“It’s called Liquid Mayhem, and it’s the next generation of fish attractants that actually help the lures slide into or on top of grass mats,” he said.

“It is a scented offering for bass, but its coating is real slick and holds on a little longer than traditional bass attractants and gels.

“Using a liquid like this one makes plastic lures and their parts slide almost without obstruction into holes and through submerged vegetation

Pittman will also Texas-rig the SwimSation.

“I will often rig it with a 3/16-ounce sinker but still swim it under the surface to trigger strikes along deeper structure such as old timber and laydowns,” the angler said.

Pittman also said the SwimSation makes an excellent trailer to his Santone swim jigs.

“Swim jigs have become an important fish-catching tool on Toledo Bend,” he said. “That SwimSation just livens it up even more, and I have been successful with the Baby Bass and White Pear colors as trailers.

“I’ll use the ½-ounce Santone swim jig and pump it through the hydrilla in deeper water with that SwimSation tail kicking on it.”

And this summer, Toledo Bend’s waters have stayed up for a relatively longer period of time than years past.

“There’s just a lot more water in Toledo Bend this year even compared to 2014,” he said. “You’re fishing in 15 feet of water now in the same location where you fished in just 10 feet last year.”

As a result Pittman will also cast two other Mister Twister lures to include the Poc’it Fry and the Poc’it Shake’R.

“With the water so high, I have taken fish by using the Poc’it Fry on a Carolina rig,” he said.

“And the Poc’it Shake’R just dances so well with that tapered tail and body making it a great bait to fish wacky style,” the angler said.

As for the rest of his tackle, Pittman casts Mister Twister lures on Abu Garcia Veritas rods with FINS braid spooled to Abu Garcia Revo reels.
